Jiangsu University of Science and Technology is an ordinary university with distinctive characteristics, which is jointly built by the province and the ministry, and is mainly based on engineering. Located in Zhenjiang, a famous historical and cultural city in History of China with beautiful scenery, Jiangsu University of Science and Technology is a key construction university in Jiangsu Province. It is an outstanding university in the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of Education, and has been approved by the Ministry of Education as an outstanding engineer education and training program university.

The school has a long history of running. It originated from Shanghai Dagong Vocational School, which was born on the bank of Huangpu River in 1933. It has gone through the periods of Shanghai Mechanical and Electrical Industrial School, Shanghai Shipbuilding Industrial School, etc. It moved to Zhenjiang in 1970 and was renamed as Zhenjiang Shipbuilding Industrial School, upgraded to Zhenjiang Shipbuilding Academy in 1978, and renamed as East China Shipbuilding Institute of technology in 1993. In 1999, Jiangsu Jianghai Trade School was merged, and in 2000, the Sericulture Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences merged with the school. In 2004, the school was renamed Jiangsu University of Science and Technology. In 2012, the People's Government of Jiangsu Province signed an agreement with China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation to jointly build Jiangsu University of Science and Technology. In 2012, Jiangsu Provincial Government, China Shipbuilding Industry Group and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation jointly established Jiangsu University of Science and Technology.

As of May 2018, there are currently three campuses in Zhenjiang East, South, and West, as well as Zhangjiagang Campus, covering an area of 2492 acres. A new campus in Shili Changshan, Dantu New District, Zhenjiang City, covering an area of more than 2350 mu, is under comprehensive construction. The school has 15 colleges; It has 15 national and provincial level experimental teaching demonstration centers, 5 provincial and ministerial level key laboratories, and 11 provincial and ministerial level public service platforms.
